Albert Wolff (Journalist)

Albert Wolff ( born December 31, 1835 in Cologne, † December 22, 1891 in Paris) was a German - French journalist, novelist and playwright.

Born in Germany, Albert Wolff graduated after school a trade apprenticeship in Paris. Then he studied in Bonn before 1857 quite settled in Paris. Here he worked as a secretary for Alexandre Dumas ( son). From 1859, he was under the pseudonym Charles Brissac editor at the magazine Le Charivari. He then moved to the Figaro, where he became the leading art critic in 1868. Later he rose to become chief editor of the newspaper.

His discussions of the Paris Salon had a great impact on the success of contemporary artists. Here, Wolff was an avowed supporter of academic painting, in which Jean -Louis -Ernest Meissonier was one of his favorite artists. Impressionism accompanied Wolff critical and only occasionally he spoke highly of individual works. The precise observations of his adopted city Paris, he later published in several books. In addition, he wrote some novels and plays.
