Alberta Order of Excellence

The Alberta Order of Excellence is a civil order of merit in the Canadian province of Alberta. The award was introduced on 16 November 1979, is awarded to civilians who have rendered outstanding services to the welfare of the citizens of Alberta. Each year, no more than ten people are awarded with this Order. The Lieutenant Governor gets it automatically at the swearing and is at the same time during his tenure Chancellor of the Order.

Structure and appointment

With the Alberta Order of Excellence are current or former long -term residents of Alberta are honored who have excelled in a particular area on behalf of the residents of Alberta by a high level of performance and success. The prerequisite is a Canadian citizen; be ruled out are those who are currently elected or appointed member of a public body. Not more than ten people can be awarded per year, but the High Council may defer the assessment of a nomination up to seven years.

The nomination process, suitable persons to be searched with the begins with proposals to the public at the Plenary. This consists of six people without preconditions, are appointed by the lieutenant governor. It meets once a year to submit proposals to the Deputy Governor. Posthumous nominations are not allowed. The Lieutenant Governor, who is an ex officio member and Chancellor of the Order of the Council and the former remains even after his resignation, announces the appointment with a known transfer, sealed with the Great Seal of the province. The new members of the Order have then the right to attach their names the initials AOE. In addition, two portraits are made, which are exhibited in the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary.

Insignia

After admission into the Order, members receive in a ceremony at Government House in Edmonton the insignia of the Order presented. According to the Regulation, which stipulates the appearance of religious badge and ribbon of the Order and its supporting manner, the main emblem of the Order is a 51 mm wide gold medallion in the shape of a paw Cross. Meanwhile arms of equal length are made of transparent blue enamel on gold production, whose patterns of prairie wheat. The cross is sandwiched between a burnished gold plate with roses and rose petals motifs and another disc with the coat of Alberta on red enamel, surrounded by a white circle with the inscription The Alberta Order of Excellence. On the back of a maple leaf on a wheat sheaf is shown. The band consists of vertical stripes in blue, purple, white and gold, representing the colors of the provincial coat of arms. Men wear appended to the Order of the collar at the end of the tape, women wear it on a loop at the left chest. For less formal occasions, members receive a lapel pin.
