Alberto Demiddi

Alberto Demiddi (* April 11 1944 in Buenos Aires, † 25 October 2000 in San Fernando ) was an Argentine rower. With two Olympic medals and world championship titles in 1970, he is one of the most successful rowers South America.

Career

Demiddi won from 1962 to 1973 twelve Argentine league title in one rowing. 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1970, he was South American champions. In 1964, he took second place at the Henley Royal Regatta, a success he was able to repeat 1966.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he lost in the flow against the Americans Donald Spero, but was in front of the double Olympic champion Vyacheslav Ivanov. Having won the second repechage to Demiddi qualified for the final, which was played in strong winds. Ivanov won his third title in a row in front of the East Berlin Achim Hill and the Swiss Gottfried Kottmann, almost two seconds behind Kottmann Demiddi finished fourth.

After Demiddi had won the 1967 One competition at the Pan American Games, he went as one of the favorites for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. In the run was Demiddi second behind the German Jochen Meissner, in the semifinals defeated Demiddi the Dutchman Jan Wienese, but clearly qualified as runner-up for the final. The final was won Wienese before Meissner and Demiddi.

This was followed Demiddis successful years, he became as a guest, European champion in 1969, won the world title in 1970 and 1971, he won the European Championship, the Henley Regatta and at the Pan American Games. At the Olympic Games in 1972 at the Rowing Course near Munich Demiddi was the clear favorite and won both his heat and his semi-final clear, however, on both days was the Russian Yuri Malischew in his races faster than Demiddi. In the final, gave the two a fierce battle, in their target Malischew had a narrow lead before Demiddi.

Alberto Demiddi has in his career won everything except the Olympic final, where he had to be content with a fourth, a third and a second place. 1974 ended Demiddi his career as an active rower.
