Alberto Lleras Dam

The Alberto Lleras - Dam, also known as Guavio Dam ( Embalse del Guavio ) is a large dam in Colombia. It is named after Alberto Lleras Camargo, a former President of Colombia (1945-1946) and is located on the basin of the Orinoco in Guavio at Gachala in Cundinamarca.

The builder and owner of the dam built to produce electricity is the Empresa de Energía de Bogotá ( EEB ). The hydropower plant has a rated capacity of 1600 MW.

For the storage content of the reservoir you will find different information: 787 320 000, 970 million or 1000 million m³. The building height is specified differently with 243, 246 and 250 m ( in feet: 797 or 800). The building volume is 17.1 or 17.755 million m³. As a year of completion, the years are called 1989, 1990 and 1992. - The most probable data are shown in the table.

Landslide

During the construction of the dam, there was on July 28, 1983, accident. In a landslide came between 150 and 200 workers lost their lives. During the rescue operation, the rescue workers were trapped by a second landslide.
