Alberto Torres

Alberto Martins Torres de Seixas (* November 26, 1865 in Itaboraí, † March 29, 1917 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian politician, journalist, lawyer and social thinker who dealt with the national unity and the social organization of Brazil.

Torres was from 1896 to 1897 Justice and Home Affairs of Brazil, 1897-1900 Governor of Rio de Janeiro and from 1901 to 1909 Minister of the Supreme Court of Brazil.

In his view, socialism and individualism with the reality of Brazil were incompatible and causes of social disintegration. He wanted to understand the Brazilian society objectively to diagnose their problems and to find pragmatic solutions; this was from his point of view with a strong state that could lead to change, possible.

Among his most famous writings include O problema nacional brasileiro (1912 ), A Organização nacional (1914 ) and As fontes da vida no Brasil (1915 ).

His ideas influenced the Brazilian Revolution of 1930 and the coup of 1964.
