Alberto Winkler

Alberto Winkler ( born February 14, 1932 in Tschars, † June 14, 1981 in Mandello del Lario ) was an Italian rower.

Career

Alberto Winkler comes from a modest family of South Tyrol. After military service he worked as a plumber at Moto Guzzi in Mandello del Lario. He was married to Cleofe; from this marriage comes from son discretion.

Physically of robust stature, he began as rowers in the farm's own sports club of Moto Guzzi. Two years later, in 1956, took a boat such club in the European Championship in Bled in the discipline of four with coxswain part: Franco Trincavelli and Romano Sgheiz outside, Alberto Winkler and Angelo Vanzin in the center and Ivo Stefanoni as helmsman. They won bronze. In the same year, on 27 November that same boat won the gold medal in front of Sweden, Finland and Australia at the Olympic Games in Melbourne.

With this success is Alberto Winkler of the first Olympic champion from South Tyrol, Italy's northernmost, mostly inhabited by a German-speaking minority province. After his athletic career, worked as an entrepreneur Alberto Winkler in Mandello del Lario. He died on June 14, 1981; in memory of his successes, the five Olympic rings are mounted on his grave.
