Albin Moller

Albin Moller, also Albinus Mollerus, (* 1541 in Straupitz, † December 26, 1618 in Altdöbern ) was a Sorbian theologian and writer. He published the first book in the Sorbian language.

Life

Albin Moller probably originated from a family of a civil servant of the Count of Dohna. First he attended the Latin school in Calau. Later, he studied theology at the University of Frankfurt / Oder and in 1568 at the University of Wittenberg. He was then in the Wendish, ie Sorbian dominated communities active in Lower Lusatia. 1572 he worked as a chaplain in Tornow (Spreewald) in a circle Calau. In the same year he was but a pastor in his native Straupitz. This office he held two years.

1574 he was in Bautzen with Hans Wolrab a book authored by him Wendish Hymns print at their own expense. This is the first book in the Wendish language. The work contains 120 hymns and psalm songs which he had translated from German into Wendish. The little catechism of Martin Luther is included in Wendish language in the book. In 1582 he published a work on names of plants, which in addition to Latin and German designation also the Sorbian name is listed. It is the oldest formation Sorbian name of the plant.

Moller was also astronomical or astrological interested and this published several works. Already in 1572 seemed such a work also at Wolrab in Bautzen.

Before the parsonage of the village church Straupitz a memorial stone to Albinus Mollerus.
