Albion Parris

Albion Keith Parris ( born January 19, 1788 in Hebron, Massachusetts, † February 11, 1857 in Portland, Maine ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican) and 1822-1827 Governor of Maine. This State, he also represented from 1827 to 1828 in the U.S. Senate.

Early years and political rise

Born in present-day Maine Albion Parris attended until 1806 Dartmouth College. After studying law he was admitted in 1809 as a lawyer. After that, he was prosecutor in Oxford County. Between 1813 and 1814 Parris was also a member of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts; after which he sat until 1815 in the state Senate. Subsequently, he was from 1815 to 1818 deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington.

After the end of his time in Congress was Parris Judge at the Federal Court of Appeals for the District of Maine, who was then still belonged to Massachusetts. This office he held until 1820. Already in 1819 he was a member of Assembly, which was to draft the constitution of the new state of Maine. Maine then broke up in 1820 by Massachusetts and joined as a state of the Union. From 1820 to 1821 was Parris judge in a probate court in Cumberland County. In 1821 he was elected governor of Maine, where he prevailed with 52.8 percent of the vote well before the Federalists Ezekiel Whitman.

Governor of Maine

After multiple re- elections Parris could officiate as governor from January 5, 1822 and January 3, 1827. During this time, the state and its economy experienced an enormous upswing. Parris negotiated unsuccessfully in the northeast with the British on contentious border issues with Canada and had to also agree with the State of Massachusetts for old property rights. The border dispute with Canada eventually rumbled on until 1842 and are only ended by the Webster - Ashburton Treaty. After his appointment as U.S. Senator in 1827 Parris resigned from the office of Governor.

From 1827 to 1828 Parris was a senator in the U.S. Congress. After he was offered a job as a judge at the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, he resigned and worked from 1828 to 1836 in this Court. From 1836 to 1850 he was an employee of the U.S. Treasury ( Second Comptroller of the Treasury). His last political office he held in 1852 as Mayor of the City of Portland. After an attempt at re-election had failed in this office, to Parris withdrew from public life. He died on 11 February 1857. Albion Parris was married to Sara Whitman, with whom he had five children.
