The Albright -Knox Art Gallery is operated by the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy. This art conveyor Association was founded in 1862 in Buffalo, making it one of the oldest associations of its kind in the United States. The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy had for some time the idea of an art gallery for the city and on the occasion of the planned for 1901 Pan - American Exposition began then in 1890 the wealthy industrialist and art patron John J. Albright the construction of a pavilion of Fine Arts (Fine Arts Pavilion ). The well-known local architect Edward Brodhead Green led the building project. Due to delays, the building was not completed in time for the Pan-American Exposition, but then was named after its founder Albright Gallery Gallery 1905 opened. It is one of the oldest museums in the United States and is listed in the Register of Historic Places of the United States ( National Register of Historic Places ). 1962 allowed donation of Seymour H. Knox, Jr. and his family and other private donors an extension of the gallery, which was renamed the Albright -Knox Art Gallery. Architect of the extension works was Gordon Bunshaft, who also designed the Lever House in New York City.

Collection

The Albright -Knox Art Gallery exhibits art works of Impressionism and Post- Impressionism, as well as works of the 19th century. She exhibits works of Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. Further, the "revolutionary" " style of the early 20th century is exhibited in works of Cubism, Surrealism and Constructivism in works of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, André Derain, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian and Alexander Rodchenko.

The development of modern art is shown in images of Abstract Expressionism, these include works of American and European postwar art to pop art and other art of the 1970s. Works by leading artists such as Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol can be seen. The collection of contemporary art includes, for example, works by Kiki Smith, Allan Graham, Georg Baselitz, John Connell and Per Kirkeby.

The gallery continues to hold works of older eras, such as William Hogarth and Joshua Reynolds and works of the Middle Ages.

The position of Ancient Art

In June 2007, the gallery was an ancient bronze statue of Artemis for 28.6 million U.S. dollars in New York auction, at that time one of the highest prices ever paid for was the sculptures of this kind. The sculpture went into private ownership. The auction triggered the question of the core mission of the museum, the museum's director, Louis Grachos was repeated in 2007 as a " collection of contemporary art " and thus justified the sale of antique statue. However, this presented the collection of many exhibited in the gallery works in question and the public has a list of " secure " non- modern works submitted, was not thinking of their sale. Thus, the whereabouts of William Hogarth's Lady's Last Stake and Sir Joshua Reynolds Cupid as a Link Boy was confirmed in the gallery, as well as the zuvoer only acquired during the years work of Gustave Courbet, Honoré Daumier Jacques -Louis David and Eugène Delacroix. The discussion on the collection plan for a museum, even when administered by means of directives, as well as the questions of funding to museums shows the challenge to the promotion of art in a mainly private sector to be financed sphere of art in the United States, in contrast to the often state-sponsored museums in Europe.
