Alcabideche is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) in the district of Cascais. The car race track Circuito do Estoril is located in the municipal area. The most famous beach of Guincho is Alcabideche.

History

After Celtiberian and Romans in particular the Arabs left their mark here. After the Reconquista was here again a settlement. The oldest parts of the oldest local church date from the 15th century and were used on the new building of the church in 1759 after the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. An independent municipality was Alcabideche 1841.

Management

Alcabideche is a comune ( freguesia ) of the circle ( concelho ) of Cascais in Lisbon District. At 39.8. km ² live 42 143 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). The population density is 1060 inhabitants per km ².

Traffic

Alcabideche is connected by the A16 motorway to Lisbon. Other connections are the roads IC 30 ( Sintra ), IC 15 ( Cascais - Lisbon ), EN 6 ( Cascais - Lisbon ), EN 9 ( Cascais - Alenquer ) and EN 249 (Lisbon - Sintra ).

Sons and daughters of the town

The most famous son of the city is the poet Ibn Mucana who left in the 11th century, the time of the Arab occupation of Alcabideche, the first written evidence of windmills.
