Alcântara ( from the Arabic al - القنطرة qantarat, "The Bridge") is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) on the 2nd Bairro the capital Lisbon. It is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Belém, Ajuda, Benfica, Campolide, Santo Contestável, Prazeres and from the capital Tagus River. The Freguesia exists since 1770, previously it was part of the Freguesia of Ajuda.

History

On August 25, 1580 an army of the Spanish King Philip II struck under the command of the Duke of Alba at Alcántara, the troops of the Portuguese pretender to the throne António I.. Portugal came under Spanish rule for sixty years.

Ponte 25 de Abril

The 25 de Abril Bridge connects as 3.2 km long bridge section with a 2278 -meter-long suspension bridge over the Tagus river in north-south direction Alcântara the southern city of Almada. Transport
