Alcee Hastings

Alcee Lamar Hastings ( born September 5, 1936 in Altamonte Springs, Florida) is an American lawyer and politician. Since 1993 he represents the state of Florida in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Alcee Hastings attended until 1953 the Crooms Academy in Sanford and then studied until 1958 at Fisk University in Nashville (Tennessee). After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession. Until 1963, he also was a student at Florida A & M University in Tallahassee. Politically, Hastings became a member of the Democratic Party. In 1970 he failed in his party's primary for the election to the U.S. Senate.

From 1977 to 1979, Hastings District Judge in Broward County. Thereafter, he served from 1979 to 1989 as a judge at the Federal District Court for the southern part of the state of Florida. During this time he came under suspicion of corruption. In 1981 he was acquitted of this suspicion. The investigation continued, however, and in 1989 Hastings was by the U.S. Senate for bribery and perjury of his judges removed from office. However, it was not forbidden him to continue in other public offices.

Despite this affair Hastings became active in politics. In 1990 he was a candidate for the office of Secretary of State of Florida, but was defeated by Republican incumbent James C. Smith. In the congressional elections of 1992 he was in the newly created 23rd electoral district of his state in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1993. According to previously nine elections he can exercise his mandate in Congress today. After he was confirmed in the congressional elections of 2010, he was able to take a further two-year term on January 3, 2011.

Hastings is a member of the Rules Committee and one of its subcommittees, the Intelligence Committee, in which he holds the vice-chair, and in the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Alcee Hastings is divorced and lives privately in Miramar.
