Alchester Roman Town

Alchester is the Anglo-Saxon and modern name of a Roman town in the English county of Oxfordshire. The ancient name is unknown.

The city formed a square of about 300 x 300 meters and had a network of streets intersecting at right angles. The metropolitan area, which occupied about 10 acres, was surrounded by a wall, but it could be observed extensive evidence of settlements outside the city walls, so that the whole city area occupied about 40 hectares. It could enclosures are observed by military camps, the time preceded the civil settlement ahead.

Within the walled city there were various stone buildings, one of which was perhaps a bathroom, another building was perhaps a Roman Celtic temple. These buildings were concentrated in the center of the village. Many buildings were built of wood.

In the city so far only a few excavations took place, so that the general character of the place still leaves open many questions. In 2003 the excavations provided labeled grave stones.
