Font classification system

In the 20th century many artists have tried to develop systems for the classification of fonts, such as François Thibaudeau in 1924, Maximilien Vox in 1954, and Hermann Zapf and Willy Wengen, the 1964 ATypI classification from the 1962 improved, leading to the standard DIN 16518. Nevertheless, there is still no generally accepted system.

Aldo Novarese also struck in 1956 for a system that is " convincing, especially from an educational perspective ," according to Daniele Baroni. Novarese shares the writings by historical, aesthetic and design criteria in ten families on:

  • Lapidari (stone cutter)
  • Medievali ( broken)
  • Veneziani ( Venetian )
  • Transizionali ( transitional)
  • Bodoni
  • Scritti ( calligraphic, handwriting imitation )
  • Ornati ( decorated )
  • Egiziani ( slab serif )
