Aldo Olivieri

Aldo Olivieri ( born October 2, 1910 in San Michele Extra, Verona, † April 5, 2001 in Lido di Camaiore ( LU) ) was an Italian football player and coach.

Olivieri was goalkeeper and won in 1938 with Italy the World Cup. Though he was not as well known as the goalkeeper Giampiero Combi legends and Dino Zoff today, he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the history of Italian football.

Before his death in 2001, Olivieri, and Pietro Rava, was the last surviving World Champion of 1938.

Career

In the club

Aldo Olivieri debuted in the season 1930/31 for Hellas Verona, the club of his hometown in Serie B. For season 1933/34, he moved to the Serie A Calcio Padova. There, however, he came only to eight inserts, as he with an opposing attacker drew upon in December 1933 in a collision a fractured skull.

After almost a year injury break and against the advice of his doctors, he ran 1934/35 again and played for the AS Lucchese Libertas in Serie B. In the following years he became one of Italy's best goalkeeper in 1935/36 it increased with Lucchese to Serie A.

For the season 1938/39, Aldo Olivieri moved to Torino, where he played under coach Ernő Erbstein. This did Olivieris quiet, introverted character and at the same time his great courage while running out the door to appreciate. These strengths later earned him the nickname Ragno Nero one ( black spider ). When Toro Aldo Olivieri graduated in seven seasons a total of 172 games.

At the end of the season 1942/43, he finished his professional career with Brescia Calcio. In 1944 he ran for the Veronese club Audace San Michele on the Series D.

In the National Team

Aldo Olivieri recommended in his time at Lucchese - Libertas with good performances for the national team and made his debut on November 15, 1936 in a 2-2 draw in Germany under coach Vittorio Pozzo for the Azzurri. At the World Cup 1938 in France Olivieri was goalkeeper and completed all four games. By a 4-2 victory in the final against Hungary he could Azzurra finally celebrate the world title with the Squadra. His last international match Olivieri graduated on 5 May 1940 again against Germany. In the total of 24 games in which Olivieri guarded the gate of the Azzurri, they reached 18 wins, five draws and only suffered one defeat.

As a coach

After the Second World War Aldo Olivieri worked as a trainer and worked among others quite successful at Inter Milan and Juventus.
