Aldose

Aldoses ( polyhydroxyaldehydes ) are monosaccharides, ie carbohydrates, wearing their carbonyl function in the terminal, that terminal, position in contrast to the ketoses. Thus, the carbonyl function is in an aldose part of an aldehyde group. By the prefix " Aldo " the membership is made clear to the aldoses: One speaks of aldo aldopentoses etc.

The oxidation of the aldehyde group of aldoses provides Aldonic acids, their reduction alditols. The specific oxidation of the primary alcohol group provides uronic acids.
