Alec Down

Alec Down ( * 1914 in Gosport, † 25 December 1995) was a British archaeologist.

Alec Down initially served in the army, studied after the Second World War engineering in London and worked until the early 1970s as an engineer. A visit to the Roman Villa in Bignor sparked his interest in archeology. In 1958 he took part in an excavation while getting to know the British archaeologist Barry Cunliffe. The following year, he oversaw a city excavations in Chichester and was involved in the next few years in various rescue excavations in the city. In 1974 he became a full-time archaeologists from the Chichester District Council appointed ( the Municipality of Chichester ). He conducted rescue excavations in the city but also in the region where he dug up a number of Roman villas. His excavation results he published in several volumes.
