Aleksandar Petaković

Aleksandar Petakovic ( born February 6, 1930 in Belgrade, † April 12, 2011 in Kraljevo ) was a Yugoslav football player and coach.

Biography

Club career

Petakovic started his career at Radnički Belgrade. With the club he joined in 1953 in the first division and was there at the best scorers, so that he was called to the national team for the first time in 1954. Under coach Illés Spitz he reached with the team in 1956 as the third in the table, the best result in the club's history with 17 goals in 15 games he had played a crucial role. The following year he was in the cup final, which was lost despite a 3-0 half-time lead against local rivals Partizan Belgrade. By the end of the decade he placed with the team in the front third of the table, but in 1961 was followed by the descent into the second division.

Since Petakovic had already exceeded the usual in the Eastern Bloc age limit of 28 years for a change in the non- socialist countries, it could change in 1961 in the West. He joined the Lille OSC in the French Division 2 of, for whom he scored eleven goals this season. After one season, he moved to Belgian club Standard Liege, whereat he hardly came to train. From 1963, he therefore played for Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands.

National

Without international match experience Petakovic belonged to Aleksandar Tirnanićs squad for the 1954 World Cup, but was not even in the tournament are used. In the following years he used irregularly four years later was again in the squad. In the Yugoslav opening game of the World Cup tournament in 1958 against Scotland, which ended 1-1 in a draw, he scored the first Turniertor for its colors. In the following game against France he was successful as a scorer and was thus instrumental in reaching the quarter-finals. His fourth tournament game was the 0-1 defeat against the reigning world champions Germany with a goal by Helmut Rahn. By 1959 he was on the national team.

Coaching career

Petakovic coached numerous Yugoslav clubs, in the late 1960s he has also been active in Turkey Vefa Istanbul and Izmirspor.
