Aleksander Brückner

Alexander Brückner (Polish Aleksander Brückner, born January 29, 1856 in Brzezany in Tarnopol, Galicia, † May 24, 1939 in Berlin) was a longtime professor of Slavic Studies at the University of Berlin.

Life

Bruckner was born in the Empire of Austria and studied from 1872 to 1876 Philosophy in Lvov, received in 1876 his PhD degree in Vienna and began in the same year studies in Slavic, which at the time was still a branch of Indo-European studies in Leipzig and Berlin under Vatroslav Jagić.

In 1877 he dedicated his work The Slavic foreign words in Lithuanian his " hochvererten dium August Leskien ".

In 1878 he qualified as a professor in Vienna and was a lecturer in Lviv.

In 1881 he moved to Berlin and he accepted a position as lecturer of Slavic language and literature in Berlin. This was raised in 1892 a full professorship. In 1889/90 it a study trip for the collection of the Slavic language literature was financed by his University, where he received plenty of material for his versatile works.

Brückner was 44 years working for the University of Berlin. He stayed away from political activities and, always stayed on in scientific circles. After the First World War, he refused offers of Warsaw, Poznan and Vilnius. Even after his retirement in 1924 he continued his scientific studies in Berlin.

Brückner's field of activity was very comprehensive: in addition to Slavic philology he was an expert in linguistics, literature, cultural history, folklore, pre-Christian religions, archeology and others. The bibliography of his publications includes more than 1,800 positions.

Brückner, who made ​​an important contribution to the recognition of Slavic Studies as an independent branch of research through his many years of service, has published numerous works in German language. He is among the few who were able to publish in the Societas Jablonoviana in Leipzig two prize essays.

Max Vasmer held in May 1939, a commemorative speech on Brückner's funeral in Berlin- Wilmersdorf and took over his chair.

Others

The Universities of Halle -Wittenberg and Jena have signed a funding agreement with the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation on 25 March 2013.

At the Martin- Luther -University Halle -Wittenberg and the Friedrich -Schiller- University Jena creates the Aleksander Brückner - Center for Poland trials. The Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation promotes the establishment of the research center with 150,000 euros a year for three years; an extension of funding for another two years is possible.
