Aleksandër Stavre Drenova

Aleksandër Stavre Drenova called Asdreni, (* April 11, 1872 in Drenova, † December 11, 1947 ) was an Albanian poet. He wrote the Albanian national anthem.

Life

Asdreni came from an orthodox family, and attended Greek school in his home village situated in Korçë. His father died in 1885, when he was thirteen years old. Then his brothers brought him to Bucharest. During this time Asdreni came with intellectuals and writers of the Albanian community in exile in Romania in contact. He has worked as editor of the weekly paper Shqipetari (the Albanians ) and wrote one of the first Albanian school reading books. After a short stay in Albania in 1914 he returned to Romania and was active in the Albanian national movement. In 1937 he visited Albania a second time, but soon returned to Romania, where he died in 1947.

Writer

Asdrenis is not only for the Albanian literature, but also for the freedom of movement of its people is of great importance. Throughout his life he pursued the goal of liberation of Albania from the Turkish rule. He criticized while the Albanian bourgeoisie and saw himself as a spokesman for the poorer people.

His early work is classified as romantic. Later Asdreni developed for socially critical realists.

His work is extensive and varied, with the poetry predominates. 1904 by Asdreni his first collection of poems 99 ( Rreze Dielli ), which he dedicated to the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg. His second book of poems ( Ëndrra e LOTE ) was published in 1912 and was the British anthropologist Edith Durham dedicated. Asdrenis third collection of poems ( Psallme Murgu ) appeared 1930.
