Aleksander Tammert

Aleksander Tammert ( born February 2, 1973 in Tartu) is an Estonian athlete.

After the failure in qualifying in the discus throw at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and a ninth place finish at the 2000 Games in Sydney Tammert occupied at the games in Athens 2004 with 66.66 meters in fourth place. After the first place winner Róbert Fazekas was disqualified from Hungary later for violating the Anti-Doping Rules, Tammert received the bronze medal.

At World Championships Tammert reached the finals five times. 1997 in Athens, he was twelfth, 1999 in Seville Tenth, 2003 in Paris / Saint- Denis seventh, 2005 in Helsinki, fourth, and 2007 in Osaka, he was eighth.

After Tammert had occupied the fifth place in Munich at the European Championships in 2002, he won the 2006 Gothenburg bronze. The winner Virgilijus Alekna from Lithuania and his Estonian Gerd Kanter compatriot as second three Baltic states were on the podium.

His best performance in the discus throw dates back to April 2006, meant with 70.82 meters short term Estonian national record. Gerd Kanter won this in September 2006 with a throw of 73.38 meters back. In the shot put Tammerts best performance is 18.05 meters from the year 1999.

Tammert is 1,96 m tall and has a contest weight of 126 kg. His father Aleksander ( born April 28, 1947 † 27 October 2006) was also Athlete: In 1966, he won the Junior European Championships in the shot put and was five times Estonian champion in this discipline (1968, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974).
