Aleksandr Klimenko (athlete)

Oleksandr Klymenko (Ukrainian Олександр Клименко, also Russian Александр Клименко, Aleksandr Klimenko; born March 27, 1970 in Kiev, † March 7, 2000 ) was a Ukrainian shot putter, who began his career in the Soviet Union and 1994 European champion.

After he became Junior World Champion in 1988 and 1989 Junioreneuropameiter, it achieved a breakthrough in 1991 the world's best. He first came on the 20 -meter mark, won the Soviet Championship, the Universiade, and competed at the World Athletics Championships 1991 in Tokyo. With 20.34 meters where he won bronze behind the Swiss Werner Günthör and the Norwegian Lars Arvid Nilsen.

At the European Indoor Championships in 1992 in Genoa Klymenko approached for the Commonwealth of Independent States. Behind his fellow Ukrainian Oleksandr Bahatsch he won the silver medal with 20.02 meters. On May 29, 1992 Klymenko won the Ukrainian championship with his personal best jump of 20.84 meters. In Barcelona at the Olympic Games in 1992 he came 20,23 m, width occupied with this but only eighth.

At the World Indoor Championships in 1993 Klymenko first appeared on the Ukrainian national team. He finished fourth with 20.58 m, five centimeters behind Bahatsch in 3rd place at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993 he came in qualifying 19.37 m and did not reach 13 as the final. Nevertheless, he also won a title in 1993, when he became World Champion students again.

At the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994, there was a triple victory of the Ukrainian shot putter. Klymenko won with 20.78 m in front Bahatsch with 20.34 m and 19.59 m with Roman Wirastjuk. At the 1995 World Championships Klymenko was twelfth again.

Oleksandr Klymenko was 1.95 m tall and weighed 115 kg in competition. Relatively early, he retired from athletics and worked as a bodyguard.
