Aleksanteri Saarvala

Aleksanteri " Ale " Saarvala ( born April 9, 1913 in Vyborg, † October 7, 1989 in Toronto ) was a Finnish gymnast. In 1936, he won an Olympic gold medal was the first Finnish Turner.

Life

Saarvala was born as Alexander Schabarin in Vyborg, Russia. As Vyborg Vyborg came as the independent Finland after the First World War, he changed his name.

Saarvala occupied at the Olympic Games in Berlin on the 19th place in the individual standings and won the team bronze. On the stretch he won with 19.367 points gold before the two German Konrad Frey ( 19.267 points) and Alfred Schwarzmann ( 19.233 points).

Twelve years later Saarvala was also at the Olympic Games in London this. With his 17th place in the individual standings, he was seventh best Finn and was thus out of the ranking, while his teammates won gold. At its special equipment, the stretching, he finished with three other gymnasts fourth place.

Saarvala won 13 Finnish championship title. The bricklayer emigrated in 1957 to Canada.
