Aleksey Petrov (weightlifter)

Alexei Petrov (Russian: Алексей Александрович Петров; born September 8, 1974 in Volgograd, Soviet Union ) is a former Russian weightlifter.

Sporting career

His international debut made ​​Petrov during the Junior World Championships 1992 in Varna, where he won with 357.5 kg in the light heavyweight division to 82.5 kg of gold. After he had won the 1993 Junior World Championships, now in the middle heavy weight to 91 kg, he first appeared in 1994 at the European Championships in Sokolow on with the seniors. With a new duel world record of 412.5 kg to Petrov sovereign gold brought before the Georgians Acacius Kachiasvilis 400.0 kg, and the Bulgarians Ivan Chakarow with 395.0 kg.

In the following June, however, the Supreme court in Moscow Petrov's ex-girlfriend said to have given him guilty of jealousy secretly anabolic steroids, which led to the pardon Petrov from the IMF and allowed him to start in Atlanta at the Olympics.

At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 Petrov stood as a clear favorite for the title, especially after Kachiasvilis moved to the heavyweight division to 99 kg. With a duel income of 402.5 kg and with a world record in the snatch of 187.5 kg, Petrov took Olympic gold in front of the Greek Leonidas Kokas and Oliver Caruso who achieved both 390 kg.

After a three year break from competition to Petrov tries again at the World Championships in Athens in 1999 in the class to 94 kg at the title, but could only occupy the fifth place with 395.0 kg. Also at the European Championships in 2000 in Sofia he reached 390.0 kg back to fifth place, all the more surprising, therefore, was his performance in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, where he was charged with 402.5 kg in single combat third behind Kachiasvilis and Szymon Kolecki.

His last international tournament played Petrov in 2003 at the World Championships in Vancouver. Here he won with 185.0 kg while silver in the snatch, but failed in pushing twice on his starting weight of 220.0 kg, then increased to 222.5 kg and failed again.
