Aleksey Shumakov

Alexei Vasilievich Shumakov Russian Алексей Васильевич Шумаков ( born September 7, 1948 in Pochjot, Krasnoyarsk Territory ) is a former Soviet wrestler. He was Olympic champion in 1976 in Greco-Roman style in the paper weight.

Career

Alexei Shumakov began as a teenager with the rings, where he focused on the Greco- Roman style. As a student he was a member of the sports club Burewestnik Krasnoyarsk. In the junior level and at the beginning of his career as a senior, he was not so successful. At a size of 1.52 meters, it was very easy, so that he had no great difficulty in the paper weight introduced in 1969, that was enough body weight to 48 kg unlearn. He first appeared in 1972, when he was already 24 years old, with one of the most important Soviet tournaments, the " Ivan Poddubny " Memorial in Minsk, in the paper weight in the winners list. He finished there behind Vladimir Zubkov and Kurbanov 3rd place.

The following year, 1973, he was vice-champion of the students behind Berceanu Gheorghe from Romania to Moscow. In 1974 he was employed at the European Championships in Madrid and finished there behind Constantin Alexandru from Romania 2nd place. He reached the same place and at the European Championship 1975 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, where he lost in the finals again against Constantin Alexandru. At the World Championships that year, Vladimir Zubkov was the four -time world champion, was used.

In 1976, Alexei Shumakov was then in Leningrad for the first time European champion in paper weight. In the final he defeated its Old rivals Constantin Alexandru. In the Soviet elimination competitions for the Olympic Games this year, he succeeded then Vladimir Zubkov off and secured to the launch site for the Olympic Games in Montreal. In Montreal he needed then six wins to become Olympic champion. The Olympic gold medal was the reward for this outstanding performance.

In 1977, Alexei Shumakov won in Gothenburg then the first time the world title in paper weight. He won here before Salih Bora from Turkey, Todor Yordanov of Bulgaria, Zerang Kermat from Iran and Jürgen Kleer from the Federal Republic of Germany. In the years 1978 and 1979 he started as early as 1977, only in the World Cup. 1979 took Alexei Shumakov at the Soviet Championship in paper weight behind Rusanov, but before Sakselik Uschkempirow the 2nd place, but won in the even more important Spartakiade 1979 before Uschkempirow and Savchuk. Alexei Shumakov then ended his international career Ringer. About his future, unfortunately, nothing is known.
