Aleramici

The Aleramiden were the family of the Marquis of Montferrat and Saluzzo from the 11th century to 1305 or 1543. She was probably at the beginning of the 10th century migrated in the royal rank from the West Frankish kingdom. Count Aledramus ( Aleramo ) was 961 one of the three nobles who ( was Aleramo whose son ) of King Berengar II got transferred one of the newly created margravates in the reorganization of feudal structures, in this case, the Marca Liguria Occidentale ( Margraviate of Western Liguria ) or Marca Aleramica with Vercelli, Monferrato, Ceva, Acqui Terme down to the Mediterranean coast between Oneglia and Albenga. The disintegration of the kingdom, and thus also the margrave's power limited to the territory then it is mostly the center of the Margraviate: for the first time in 1040, a Marcio from the family is called the Margrave of Montferrat. From scattered possessions to the west and the inheritance of a daughter of a Marquis of Turin, a branch of the family then formed the Margraviate of Saluzzo, which is mentioned in 1142 for the first time.

The greatest notoriety gained the Aleramiden in connection with the Crusades. The brothers Wilhelm Conrad of Montferrat Lungaspada and played in the Kingdom of Jerusalem a prominent role, their children and Mary Baldwin V of Montferrat were crowned kings. A third brother, Boniface of Montferrat I was the leader of the Fourth Crusade, which led to the conquest of Constantinople and the establishment among them the Latin Empire and the Kingdom of Thessaloniki.

The line in Saluzzo died out in 1548, after she had a few years earlier lost the Margraviate. The line in Montferrat had lapsed with the Margrave John I. 1305. It was succeeded by the Palaeologus, the current imperial family of Byzantium, who ruled the Margraviate of a further 230 years. In less significant side lines of the family still exists today.

Master list

The counting of the Marquis named Wilhelm is not uniform in the literature. Thus, for example, often Guglielmus ( † before 933 ) as William I and Guglielmus ( 961/967 witnessed ) when William II, during which time the Margraviate of Montferrat did not exist, as well as Wilhelm counted Lungaspada († 1177 ), as the Crusaders lived and died before his father, so was not even Margrave of Montferrat.

The counting here follows that of Schwennicke ( see references ) proposed that with Margrave Wilhelm ( † before 1042 ) begins its ( presumed ) son Otto is called in 1040 for the first time as " Marchio Montiferratensis ".

This section follows the presentation Harry Bresslaus (see references ), who sees the progenitor Teto, the son of Anselm ( † before 1055 ), but only so justified - as a guideline and not necessarily - that one of Tetos sons had the same name.
