Alessandro Magnasco

Alessandro Magnasco (also called Lissandrino, * 1667 in Genoa, † 1749 ) was an Italian painter.

Although Magnasco was born in Genoa, he spent most of his life in Milan and went through there also his artistic career. He received a strong influence by the artist Francesco Guardi and Marco Ricci.

At the beginning of his artistic career, he distinguished himself mainly by portraits. Today, however, almost nothing is known of his early work. Only later he painted the motives for which he later became known. Mainly he was referring to melodramatic scenes that were set in stormy landscapes, ruins and monasteries also often appeared in the background of his works. The people that he painted on the Leindwand, thereby belonged mainly to the clerical section of the population.

Due to its physical appearance Magnasco received the nickname Lissandrino, which means as much as smaller Alessandro.
