Alessandro Melani

Alessandro Melani ( born February 4, 1639 Pistoia, † October 3, 1703 in Rome) was an Italian composer of the Baroque.

Life

Alessandro Melani was born into a musical family from Pistoia. His six brothers, including the castrato Atto Melani were all musicians. He was first Kapellmeister of the cathedral of Orvieto and Ferrara, before he had succeeded his brother Jacopo Melani (1623-1676) at the Cathedral of Pistoia. 1667, he was the bandmaster of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Louis of the French in 1672, a position he held for 26 years.

Work

Melani's work covers both ecclesiastical and secular compositions. Above all, Melani made ​​a name for himself as a composer of operas; his works came in many Italian cities, but also in Vienna for the first performance, including a " pastiche " (joint work of several composers ) with Alessandro Scarlatti and Bernardo Pasquini. In addition, he has published three collections with eight - and ten -part motets, also eight oratorios, which are preserved only in manuscript, like most other plants.
