Alessandro Roberto

Alessandro Roberto ( May 22nd, 1977 in Vercelli ) is a retired Italian alpine skier. The giant slalom specialist launched from 1999 to 2008 in the World Cup, where he went twice in the top ten, and took part in the 2001 World Championships and the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Career

Earlier in his career Alessandro Roberto spent several years with FIS races and national championships at the start, mainly in his specialist discipline Giant Slalom, but went only rarely among the top ten. After he had reached in 1998/99 first podium of the season and on 2 December 1999 with a victory in the giant slalom in Alleghe won an FIS race for the first time, he went up into the Italian national team and was henceforth also in the World and European used. In the European Cup he in the season 1999/2000 with the exception of the first race in each giant slalom in the top ten, reached the end of season two second places in Sella Nevea and Kappl and was fifth in the giant slalom standings. Twelve days after his European Cup debut took Alessandro Roberto on 19 December 1999, for the first time participated in a World Cup giant slalom. Success of the sports group of the Italian Army ( Corpo Sportivo Italiano dell'Esercito ) was belonging athlete even in the military World Ski Championships 2003 in Pyhätunturi, where he won the bronze medal in the giant slalom.

The career of the Italian was interrupted at the beginning of the season 2003/ 04. During a fall in the giant slalom in Soelden, he retired to injury in his left knee and was sidelined the rest of the winter. In his comeback season in 2004 /05 did not succeed Roberto to connect to its previous results. In the World Cup he could only score twice and the European Cup did not reach top 10 results, only in the military World Ski Championships 2005 in Predeal, he won the silver medal in the giant slalom. Therefore, in the season 2005/ 06 he came only once in the World Cup for use, but had no points. He played mainly European Cup races, reached in the second half of the season again several top -10 results and was the last giant slalom in Altenmarkt in third place on the podium again. In the giant slalom standings, he was eighth.
