Alex Fergusson (politician)

Alex Fergusson ( born April 8, 1949 in Leswalt ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party.

Life

Fergusson attended Eton College and then moved to New Zealand for two years. After his return he earned a agricultural science degree from the West of Scotland Agricultural College. He was afterwards for many years engaged in farming and was committed to including as President of the Blackface Sheepbreeders Association and as a member of the Scottish Landowners Federation. Fergusson is married and father of three sons.

Political career

For the first time Fergusson joined the first Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 to national elections. However, in his constituency Galloway and Upper Nithsdale he only received the second highest number of votes behind the SNP candidate Alasdair Morgan and thus missed the direct mandate of the constituency. As Fergusson, however, was also listed on the Regional Evaluation of the Conservatives for the election Region South of Scotland on the first rank, he received as a result of the election results is one of the four list mandates of the conservatives in this election region and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. In the parliamentary elections of 2003, he won by a margin of only 99 votes for the first time the direct mandate of Galloway and Upper Nithsdale and defended it at the following 2007 parliamentary elections in the newly formed Cabinet Fergusson was elected Speaker of Parliament and thus replaced the SNP politician George Reid. In order to preserve the neutrality rested for the duration of his term of office his membership in the Conservative Party. In the next election period Tricia Marwick was elected speaker. As part of the constituency reform of 2011, the constituency Galloway and Upper Nithsdale was dissolved and largely replaced by the newly created constituency of Galloway and West Dumfries. For this Fergusson candidate in the 2011 parliamentary elections and won again just the direct mandate.
