Alex van Warmerdam

Alex van Warmerdam ( born August 14, 1952 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch film director, screenwriter, actor and painter.

Life

Alex van Warmerdam studied graphic design and painting at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. He then worked as a writer, director and actor at the co-founders of independent theater houses Orkater.

In 1980 he founded together with his brother Marc van Warmerdam and Thijs van der Poll, the theater company De Hond Mexicaanse ( German: The Mexican dog).

His first film, the comedy Abel, appeared in 1986. Noord For Erlingen van Warmerdam was in 1992 awarded the European Film Award for Best young film and the Golden Calf for Best Director.

His most recent film Borgman received in 2013 an invitation to compete in the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

In most of his films van Warmerdam also appears as an actor in supporting roles. He is also author of the novel De Hand van een Vreemde.

He is married to actress Annet Malherbe. The couple has two children.
