Alex Wilson (footballer born 1933)

Alexander Wilson ( born October 29, 1933, Buckie; † 29 July 2010) was a Scottish football player. The defender was at the 1954 World Cup squad for the Scottish national team.

Career

After growing up in Scotland, Wilson graduated in 1949 at the English club Portsmouth FC. Pompey he held then 18 years loyal and experienced with the club successes and failures. Initially, only young reserve player, he succeeded in the season 1953/54, the breakthrough in the First Division. After just 25 league games for the club he was appointed to the national team for the last test match against Finland just before the World Cup finals in 1954. He then was part of the 22 players strong World Cup squad that had to report to FIFA the Scottish FA. However, the association took only 13 players in Switzerland, so that Wilson remained on the island. The international game appearance before the tournament was his only international appearance.

In the following the World Cup season in 1954/55 Wilson reached with his club to third place behind champions Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The success was followed by the fall, 1959, he ended after only six wins this season with the club, the season the relegation zone. Also in the Second Division went against relegation. In the first year still on the last non- relegation zone he went with the team from 1961 to the third tier. There he was part of the team that managed the direct resurgence. Then he played until 1967 for the Portsmouth FC, who thanked him and his also that year his career -ending teammate Johnny Gordon farewell with games against Arsenal and Stoke City for the services. In Chelmsford City, he was subsequently allowed to end his football career in Non- League and won with the team the 1968 Championship of the Southern Football League, at the time but there was no promotion to the Football League.

After end of his career Wilson worked for various printers. After he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he died in the summer of 2010.
