Alex Yermolinsky

Alex Yermolinsky (originally Alexei Jermolinski, Russian Алексей Владиславович Ермолинский, scientific transliteration: Aleksej Jermolinskij; born April 11, 1958 in Leningrad) is an American chess master with roots in the Soviet Union.

Life

Alex Yermolinsky learned chess as an 8- year-old. The generation of Garry Kasparov belonging, he went through in the former USSR, the Soviet chess school and as a teenager was among the top ten youth players of the USSR. He won as a 19 -year-old Soviet league titles and focused 1981-1988 activities on coach, performed with Alexander Khalifman and Irina Levi Tina. A study he broke off and worked as a factory worker. His level of play he was able to raise significantly, however, he succeeded not a qualification for the USSR Championship. In 1989 he emigrated from the crumbling Soviet Union. Yermolinsky went first to Italy, where he celebrated many successes and won almost every tournament in which he took part: including in Caorle 1989, Forli, 1989, San Benedetto del Tronto in 1989 and Arco in 1989.

In 1990 he moved to the United States and soon received U.S. citizenship. He first worked in New Jersey in a pharmazeuthischen company and played mostly American Weekend Tournaments. In 1991 he became shared second place at the National Chess Congress in Philadelphia behind Boris Gulko and was awarded the title of International Master in the same year by the FIDE. 1992, the year in which he was Grand Master, he first represented his new home at the Chess Olympiad in Manila.

In 1993 he started his professional career. He won in 1992 and 1993 in Philadelphia, in 1993 in Columbia and Bethesda. In the same year he won the first time the U.S. Championship in Long Beach ( shared with Alexander Shabalov ). In 1994 he continued his winning streak continues: Asheville, Reno ( Texas) and North Bay. During 1995 Tournament wins in Asheville, Woburn (Massachusetts ), Philadelphia, Concord ( CA ) (U.S. Open) and Kings Iceland. In 1996 he won in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and the Groningen Open and won for the second time at the U.S. Championships in Parsippany. 1997 was followed by success in Kissimmee ( U.S. Open) and Washington, DC. Asheville 1998, Allentown, Woburn and Philadelphia, 1999 in Newburgh. 2000 Ledyards and in Saint Paul (Minnesota ) (U.S. Open). 2001 won Yermolinsky the first time aligned American Continental Championship in Cali, 2002 in Las Vegas ( U.S. Open ), 2003 in Sioux Falls, San Francisco, San Diego and Reno, again in 2005 in San Francisco.

Yermolinsky participated for the U.S. team at numerous World Championships and Chess Olympiads. In 1993 he won with his team the gold medal at the World Team Cup in Lucerne. A silver medal was awarded his team in 1997 also in Lucerne. In the individual competition, he scored a third place respectively. From the 1992 Chess Olympiad in Manila to the Chess Olympiad 2000 in Istanbul, he played five times for the United States. With his team, he won bronze in 1996 and silver in 1998.

His current Elo rating is 2530 (as of May 2011). His previous highest Elo rating was 2660 in January 1998.

Family

He is married to the Lithuanian chess player Camilla Baginskaite since 1997. They have two sons together and met each other at the 1996 Chess Olympiad in Yerevan know.
