Alexander Bernardazzi

Alexander ( Ossipowitsch ) Bernardazzi (Russian Александр Осипович Бернардацци; born July 2, 1831 in Pyatigorsk, Russian Empire; † 14 August 1907 in Fastow, now Ukraine) was a Russian- Swiss architect, who worked mainly in the former Russian Empire. He created many well-known buildings, among others, in Chisinau, Odessa and Bendery.

Profession

After completing his degree in architecture in 1850 in St. Petersburg brought him his work in the Russian province of Bessarabia. There he devoted himself in the then small town of Chisinau several large buildings, including the Biserica Sfintul Pantelemon ( Grecească - the Greek Church ) and thus influenced the city to this day.

After 1878, he shifted his professional focus to Odessa, where he influenced the city with a variety of buildings. From him, among other things originated the designs for Invalides (1886 /87), the new stock exchange (1894 /99), the trading house Petrokokino (1895 /96), the Hotel Bristol (1898 /99) and the Department of Medicine ( 1901/ 04). The modifications to the central station and the opera were also held under his direction.

Family

Bernardazzi Alexander was the son of the Swiss architect and artist family Bernardazzi with origin Pambio at Lugano in Ticino; Parents: Giuseppe Bernardazzi senior and his wife Wilhelmine Dorothea Conradi.

His first marriage to Cristina Frantsevna brought him three children, among them the later architect Alexander Bernardazzi Junior. His wife died in Chisinau. With his second wife, Julie Bulazel his son Eugen Bernardazzi was born, who later also as an architect began its work.
