Alexander Buckner

Alexander Buckner (* 1785 in Jefferson County, Kentucky, † June 6, 1833 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri ) was a U.S. Representative (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Missouri in the U.S. Senate.

After he had studied law in his native Kentucky, Alexander Buckner moved to Charleston in 1812, first in Indiana, before he in 1818 settled near Jackson in Missouri Territory. There he practiced law and also was active in agriculture. He was later appointed by the territorial governor to the district attorney for the Cape Girardeau - district. He also served in 1820 as president of the Constitutional Convention for the future state of Missouri.

His first political office was Buckner held as member of the Senate from Missouri 1822-1826. On March 4, 1831, he then moved to his election victory against incumbent David Barton of the National Republican Party in the Senate in Washington; However, he died later during his tenure on June 6, 1833, the consequences of Cholera and was buried on his farm in Cape Girardeau County. In 1897 a reburial at the municipal cemetery of Cape Girardeau.

Buckner was a Freemason and co-founder of the Grand Lodge of Indiana and their first Grand Master.
