Alexander County (North Carolina)

Alexander County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States and is part of the Hickory - Morganton -Lenoir Metro Area. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Taylorsville, which was named after General Zachary Taylor.

Geography

The County is located in west-central North Carolina, to a large extent in the Brushy Mountains, in the north about 70 miles from Virginia to the north west about 80 miles from Tennessee and has an area of 682 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wilkes County, Iredell County, Catawba County and Caldwell County.

Alexander County is divided into seven townships: Ellendale, Gwaltneys, Little River, Miller, Sharpes, Sugar Loaf, Taylorsville and Wittenburg.

History

Alexander County was formed in 1850 from parts of Caldwell County, Iredell County and Wilkes County. It was named after Alexander the family, whose members were early proponents of the settlement of this area.

According to the census of 2000, there were 33 603 people in Alexander County.
