Alexander Cunningham

Sir Alexander Cunningham (* January 23, 1814 in London, † November 28, 1893 London ) was a British Indologist.

Alexander Cunningham served as a British engineer officer in India. Thereafter he was appointed as the first director of the British- Indian Antiquities (see Archaeological Survey of India ). Cunningham is regarded as one of the founders of Indian archeology and numismatics. He led, among other things, in Harappa and Sanchi by excavations.
