Company History

Alexander Dennis was born on 1 January 2001 as TransBus by the merger of Dennis and Alexander, who had previously part of the Mayflower Corporation, as well as the Henlys participation Plaxton.

TransBus thus had numerous production plants in the United Kingdom: Former Alexander factories in Falkirk (Scotland) and Belfast ( Northern Ireland), former Plaxton factories in Anston and Scarborough, the former factory of Northern Counties in Wigan and the Dennis factory in Guildford.

At its peak TransBus produced a wide variety of chassis and bodies for line and coaches and fire engines. For the chassis listed next to others of Dennis Darts, one of the best selling bus models in the United Kingdom, and the Dennis Trident 2 TransBus also produced export models for use in New York City, Hong Kong and other cities. The Dennis Trident is the most widely used in London bus model.

Had been since then fused through the establishment of TransBus Plaxton and Alexander, comprised the TransBus offer both Plaxton coaches and two double-decker structures ( Plaxton President and Alexander ALX400 ), the Citybus Alexander ALX300 Citybus and the pointer structure which on in large numbers the aforementioned Dennis Dart chassis was mounted and thus the Alexander ALX200 structure replaced, which had previously been mounted on the dart bogie.

On 31 March 2004, the Mayflower Group and in consequence also reported TransBus insolvency. On 17 May 2004, the coach business Plaxton was sold to its management; this company returned to his brand after TransBus had previously abandoned the traditional brands. Four days later acquired independent business on 21 May 2004 the rest of TransBus (Alexander and Dennis ). One of the investors was Brian Souter, owner of Stagecoach Group, its new acquisition but kept separate from the bus and train operators. The new company was named Alexander Dennis. The sale did not include the former Alexander factory in Belfast, which was later closed. On 26 January 2005, the factory closed in Wigan.

Following the bankruptcy period and restructuring Alexander Dennis has received numerous major orders from British bus operators and is the preferred supplier of the Stagecoach Group. The company was able to connect with the model Enviro500 also to the success of its predecessor companies in traditional markets such as Hong Kong and Ireland. The ALX400 double decker structure remained until the end of production in 2006, the standard model of Dublin Bus.

At the North American market, Alexander Dennis secured in 2005 orders for its Enviro500 model worth £ 25 million customers in Victoria (British Columbia) and New York City, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

With well-filled order books, the company presented in the first quarter of 2006, two new models, the Double Decker Enviro400 and Enviro200 Dart midi bus.

In early 2007 replaced Colin Robertson Jim Hastie as CEO. In May 2007, Alexander Dennis took over again Plaxton, whereby the two previous TransBus areas were brought together again.

Due to the financial crisis of 2007-2010 the company experienced declining job numbers, released in spring 2009 in Falkirk nearly 100 employees and led the end of 2009 a short-time working. On the other hand, acquired companies such as Stagecoach and Transport for London in the years 2009 and 2010 for environmental reasons, several hybrid buses.

In May 2012, the Canadian manufacturer New Flyer Industries Inc. and Alexander Dennis Limited announced a joint venture to develop and produce the midi buses for the North American market. New Flyer takes over production and marketing, Alexander Dennis development and testing.

On June 7, 2012 Alexander Dennis Limited acquired the Australian manufacturer of bus bodies and seats Custom Coaches.
