Alexander Farnese, Prince of Parma

Alexandro Farnese ( born January 10, 1635 Parma, † February 18, 1689 in Madrid) was Prince of Parma and Piacenza.

Origin

Farnese was the second son of ODOARDO I. Farnese (* April 28, 1612; † September 11, 1646 ) and his wife Margherita de ' Medici ( * May 31, 1612; † February 6, 1679 ). He is also known as Alessandro di ODOARDO to avoid confusion with his great-grandfather Alessandro Farnese (* August 27, 1545, † December 3, 1592 ) should be avoided.

Life

Throughout his career Farnese held numerous political and military offices. He was from September 1656 to 1658 General of the Venetian knights. At the end of the war between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, he joined the Spanish army. He was born on November 17, 1664 General of the Italian knights. In 1675 he was viceroy of Navarre, also he was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece. On July 25, 1676, he gave up his position and was now up to the May 25, 1677 Viceroy of Catalonia. He was sent to the Spanish Netherlands, where he was governor 1682 of 1678 until April 1. After that, he fought 21 December 1682 to 1687 again as a general for the Venetians. In 1687, he was appointed Admiral of the Spanish fleet, at the same time he was also adviser to the crown.

He died on February 18, 1689 in Madrid.

Family

Alexandro Farnese was never married. He had children with his mistress Maria Lao y Carillo.
