Alexander Givental

Alexander B. Givental (born 1958 ) is a Russian -born American mathematician who deals with symplectic topology, singularity theory and algebraic geometry with interactions to string theory.

Givental is a student of Vladimir Arnold, where he received his doctorate in 1987 at the Moscow State University ( singularities solutions Hamilton-Jacobi equations in variational problems with inequality constraints ). He's since the mid- 1990s, Professor at the University of Berkeley.

After String theorists in 1991 could count rational curves on Calabi -Yau manifolds, especially on three-dimensional algebraic varieties ( Quintiken, solutions of polynomials of degree 5 ), using a " mirror symmetry " to other Calabi -Yau manifolds, Givental was one of the mathematicians, of this was a mathematical rigorous foundation in specific Calabi -Yau manifolds. Givental used in this case the equivariant quantum cohomology and Floerhomologie.

In 1994 he was invited speaker at the ICM ( Homological geometry and mirror symmetry ).
