Alexander Karpovtsev

Alexander Georgijewitsch Karpowzew (Russian Александр Георгиевич Карповцев; born April 7, 1970 in Moscow, Russian SFSR, † 7 September 2011 in Tunoschna near Yaroslavl ) was a Russian ice hockey player and coach, who, during his career, including for the New York Rangers Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders and Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League played.

Career

During his Soviet times he played at HK Dynamo Moscow, with which he was three times Soviet Champion. NHL Entry Draft 1990, he was selected in the eighth round at 158th place by the Quebec Nordiques. In 1993 he moved to the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League. Further stations of his career in the NHL were Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders and the Florida Panthers. In 1994 he won with at the New York Rangers, together with Sergei Nemchinov, Alexei Kovalev and Sergei Zubov the Stanley Cup. The four were the first Russians who were immortalized on this trophy.

In 2004 he went back to Russia and still played until 2008 when HK Sibir Novosibirsk, Omsk Avangard and HK Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the Russian league. As an assistant coach Karpowzew worked for Ak Bars Kazan in the 2009/10 season. For the 2011/12 season he was bound in the same position of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. On September 7, 2011, he died in a plane crash near Yaroslavl killed.

Internationally

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he became a member of the Russian national ice hockey team. His international career was crowned with the gold medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1993. He was inducted into the "Russian Hockey Hall of Fame" in 1993.
