Alexander Koblencs

Alexander Koblenz ( Latvian Aleksandrs Koblencs; born September 3, 1916 in Riga, † December 9, 1993 ) was a Latvian chess master, coach and journalist.

Tournament chess

Koblenz won four times the championship of Latvia, namely 1941, 1945, 1946 and 1949.

Chess coach

He coached the valley at its world title fight in 1960 against Botvinnik. He also oversaw the USSR team at the Chess Olympiad in Moscow in 1956 and 1960 in Leipzig.

Chess author and journalist

Koblenz authored many training and textbooks, several have been translated into German. His 1987 published autobiography is titled chess life ( ISBN 3-11-010183-1 ). For several years he was editor of the Latvian chess magazine SAHS. Since 1991 he was in Berlin chief editor of the magazine Chess Journal.
