Alexander of Greece

Alexandros Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Α, (born 20 Julijul / August 1 1893greg in Tatoi in Athens, .. .. † 12 Oktoberjul / October 25 1920greg in Athens ) was from 1917 to 1920 King of Greece.

Life

Alexander was born the second son of King Constantine I of Greece and his wife Sophie of Prussia. He graduated from the Athens Military Academy Scholi Evelpidon in 1912 and took part in the Balkan Wars, in part as an officer of artillery.

Because of its pro-German attitude King Constantine I was forced to abdicate in 1917 and left the country together with the Crown Prince George. Alexander ascended then as Alexandros I. the Greek throne. He ruled on 12 June 1917 until his death.

On November 4, 1919, he married the derived from the ancient Greek nobility Aspasia Manos what the people gave him a great popularity that persists to this day. Great popularity brought him beyond his constitutionalist stance and his support of the Entente.

His daughter Alexandra (1921-1993), later Queen of Yugoslavia, was born only five months after his death. Alexander died of blood poisoning, which he had contracted through a bite of his favorite monkey, and was buried in the Royal Cemetery at Tatoi.

In his honor, the Thracian city Dedeağaç was renamed in 1919 to Alexandroupolis.
