Alexander Ostrovsky

Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky (Russian Александр Николаевич Островский; scientific transliteration Aleksandr Nikolaevich Ostrovsky; * 31 Märzjul / April 12 1823greg in Moscow, .. .. † 2 Junijul / June 14 1886greg in Schtschelykowo ), was a Russian playwright.

Life

Ostrowski was born in 1823 in Moscow. After graduating from the high school he studied at the Law Faculty of Moscow University, which he gave up in 1843. He then worked on his father's wish for several law offices as a clerk. Ostrowski 1851 announced his ministry and devoted himself entirely to his art. His first plays were very successful in Russia stages. As the state held the monopoly theater and the authors thus often had to forego salary, so their pieces could be listed at all, even Ostrowski lived constantly in money worries. Ostrowski's idea was to create a sophisticated pure -Russian dramas repertoire. 1886 Ostrowski was eventually appointed head of the Schedule section of the Moscow theater and the director of the theater school, but he died in the same year.

Effect

Ostrowski is considered a masterpiece of comedy. Songs like " Klugsein protects against folly not " or " poverty is no disgrace " are still considered two of the most influential Russian comedies. Ostrowski also had great influence on Leo Tolstoy, who had looked at many Ostrowski comedies at a young age.

Leoš Janáček's opera " Káťa Kabanová " (1919-1921) is based on Ostrovsky's play " Thunderstorm ".

For an adaptation of Ostrovsky's play " A stupidity makes even the smartest " produced Sergej Eisenstein 1923 short film " Glumows diary " in which he, a character from the play by Ostrovsky through various movements in his various roles transformed Glumow.
