Alexander Petersson ( born July 2, 1980 in Riga, Latvian SSR, Soviet Union) is a native of Latvia handball player. Since 2004 he has Icelandic citizen. In the handball league he plays Lion at the Rhein- Neckar.

Career

Petersson has a body length of 1.86 m and weighs 90 kg. The left-hander plays mostly on the position of right winger or right back. He first played until 1998 in Riga, then to 2003 KR Grótta in Iceland until 2005 at the HSG Dusseldorf until 2007 when TV Großwallstadt and then to 2010 with the SG Flensburg -Handewitt. Subsequently, he was active for the foxes Berlin. Since the 2012/13 season playing for the Rhein- Neckar Löwen.

For the Icelandic national team, he has been denied 150 international matches in which he scored 597 goals. For the Latvian national handball team, he completed 40 internationals.

At the 2007 World Championships in Germany Petersson occupied with Iceland ranked eighth and was in the top ten of the best scorers. He contributed to the greatest success of the Icelanders, winning the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. At the 2010 European Championships he won the bronze medal with the national team. As the best right winger, he was elected to the World Cup 2011 in the " All- Star Team". At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he won with Iceland -loss point free the preliminary round Group A, but failed in the quarterfinals just to Hungary.

The Icelandic Handball Association HSI honored him in 2010 as a handball player of the year.
