Alexander Ploner

Alexander Ploner (* July 10, 1978 in Bruneck ) is an Italian alpine skier. The special discipline of the South Tyrolean is the giant slalom.

Career

Ploner learned to ski at the age of three years. After he had participated in FIS races a few years he went in December 1997 for the first time in the European Cup, but went there until February 1999 regularly at the start. Earlier in his career he started yet in the slalom and giant slalom, and in very few Super G and downhill, but has evolved over the years into a pure giant slalom specialist. In 2000, he was Italian Champion in the giant slalom, but then suffered a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear and was in the season 2000/ 01 deny any race.

After successful rehabilitation Ploner launched on December 9, 2001 in Val d'Isere for the first time in the World Cup, one month later, he won the 20th place in Adelboden his first World Cup points. A little later he celebrated his first European Cup victory. On February 3, 2002, he reached the twelfth place in the World Cup giant slalom in St. Moritz and qualified with this performance for the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, where he was sixth after the first run, but was eliminated in the second.

On 28 February 2004 the Italians with the third rank in Kranjska Gora scored his first and only podium finish in the World Cup. In March, he won two European Cup giant slalom and secured the win in the discipline standings. In December 2004, he suffered the second time a serious knee injury and was sidelined the rest of the season.

After this injury Ploner not found a long time back to his old form. In January 2008, he reached the 13th place in Adelboden again result in the World Cup points ranking. The real comeback then succeeded in the 2008 /09 season: he won two victories in the European Cup after five years for the second time the giant slalom standings and reached the World Cup with the eighth place in Adelboden January 10, his second top - 10 ranking. In the 2009/10 season Ploner coincided with consistently good performance on ( four top - 10 finishes ), which eventually earned him the tenth place in the Giant Slalom World Cup. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he finished 18th in the giant slalom. In the season 2010/11 he was unable to repeat the previous year's results. Best result of the season was a 14th place in Adelboden. He therefore did not come at the World Cup 2011 are used.
