Alexander Pomerantsev

Alexander Nikanorovich Pomeranzew (Russian Александр Никанорович Померанцев; born December 30 1848jul / January 11 1849greg in Moscow, .. † October 27, 1918 in Petrograd ) was a Russian architect and master builder, who for several of his famous buildings designed in Moscow, was known St. Petersburg and other cities.

Pomeranzew studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture until 1874, then moved to St. Petersburg and moved to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. After graduating in 1878 he worked for nine years abroad, including in Italy, France and Switzerland. After his return he completed his habilitation in 1892 and professor of architecture at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In the years 1899-1900 he was also rector.

The most famous building Pomeranzews are 1893 finished Moscow superiors trade series ( now known as the GUM ), which he had designed five years earlier in collaboration with the engineer Vladimir Shukhov. This building was externally maintained in a style similar to the old Russian style architecture mainly, while the modern elements as conceived by Shukhov glass roof were mainly applied to the interior.
