Alexander S. Onassis Foundation

The Alexander Onassis Foundation is a private foundation, which was founded by Aristotle Onassis in memory of his unfortunate son. Was significantly expanded the foundation of his daughter Christina Onassis.

The Foundation is managed by a committee of 15 people and has its legal seat in Liechtenstein. The one area is economically active, while the other looks after the Wohltätigskeitsprojekte. Contract awards (selection )

The Foundation awards the Onassis International Prizes, such as the Hestia Prize for the integration of foreigners. In 1980, the Prix d' Athene, this awarded to Desmond Tutu.

Since 2010 is awarded in Hamburg together with the Senate Environmental Prize of the Foundation. The choice fell on Hamburg, because the city has positioned itself as an environmental city, and at the same time has a reference to Onassis. With 250,000 euros he is one of the highest prizes in the field of environmental protection.

  • Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre ( OCSC ) in Athens
  • In Athens, she maintains the Onassis Cultural Center ( Onassis Cultural Center (Athens) ). The aim is to promote the arts in Greece and the promotion of Greek artists abroad. The areas include both free and applied and performing arts. It is planned that the full operation of this institution in the year 2010 starts. The building on the Syngrou Avenue was designed by Architecture Studio. Housed are several exhibition and theater spaces and a recording studio.
