Alexander the Alabarch

Tiberius Julius Alexander ( * before 10 BC; † after 50 AD ) was a Romanized Jew from Alexandria, Egypt. His brother, Philo was the greatest philosopher of the Hellenistic Judaism, his son of the same was prefect of Judea ( 46-48 ) and Egypt ( 68-69 ).

Julius Alexander was responsible Arabarch for the customs revenue of the Alexandrian harbor and later became financial manager of Antonia, the sister of the Roman Emperor Tiberius. He acquired a large fortune, which enabled him to Herod Agrippa financially under the arms and to donate to the facilities of the Temple in Jerusalem. Under Tiberius ' successor Caligula Julius Alexander was imprisoned in Rome. Perhaps he had come as a member of a conference organized by his brother delegation Alexandrian Jews there and was arrested by the ever- located ligand in dire financial straits Emperor because of his wealth.

After the murder of Caligula in 41 was Iulius Alexander 's successor Claudius, the son of Antonia, released and able to return to his homeland. Maybe he was raised by Claudius also knighted. The Emperor appointed in any case Iulius Alexander's friend Herod Agrippa the king of the whole of Judea. This retaliated for the financial support by the younger son of his patron, Marcus Julius Alexander, married his daughter Berenice. After that Iulius Alexander loses track, so it's unclear whether he still experienced the governorships of his son Tiberius.
