Tollmann was in 1946, despite the war years, complete the graduation schedule. This was followed by a teaching degree for natural history and geography, which he completed in 1951 in order to connect it directly his doctorate in geology and paleontology. In the context of this study, he wrote the dissertation The Neogene on the southwestern edge of the Leitha Mountains between Eisenstadt and chert. On 15 January 1955 he finished his studies brilliantly sub auspiciis praesidentis and was then assistant at the University of Vienna. It dealt mainly with the geology and tectonics of the Eastern Alps and published a multi-volume work on the geology of Austria. Even with his book Eastern Alps synthesis of 1963, he encountered fierce controversies that were then in the context of the dispute neo- autochthonistischer and nappistischer geologists schools ( with the latter including his teacher Leopold Kober and he himself ). Its geology of Austria was in large part an elaboration of this first draft. He planned a shorter version for wider circle of readers, but failed due to technical publishing reasons. Another focus was the geology of the northern Limestone Alps, about which he wrote three major monographs.

He was committed to protecting the environment and against nuclear energy and was from 1982 to 1983 Chairman of the United Greens of Austria ( VGÖ ). However, the VGÖ reached with the Austrian national elections on 24 April 1983 as a list Tollmann only 1.93 % of the votes and thus failed the threshold for representation in parliament. Great man stepped back then as Chairman (see History of the Green - The Green Alternative ).

In his 1993, together with his wife, the geologist and paleontologist Edith Kristan -Toll man who wrote book And the deluge there was but he defended the thesis that the Genesis and the Apocalypse of John the scattering impact of seven fragments of a meteor ago describe about ten thousand years, and the state subsequently. The Pyramid of Cheops is explained as " Beaver Lodge ", which should withstand the next flood.

In later years - after the death of his wife and research partner in 1995 - he turned to more esoteric topics, for which he was sharply criticized in scientific circles. Based on the prophecies of Nostradamus, the solar eclipse of August 11, 1999 and other sign he said in August 1999, a global disaster before, which he expected in a bunker in Albrecht Berg at the Great Krems in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. His book was a bestseller in Austria, he worked with his wife Edith Kristan -Toll man.
